European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
