Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" emerged.
This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that he be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
